This page explains what personal data this site handles, why, who else handles it and what your rights are. You can use the site without an account and without giving your name or email address.

What we handle and why

Delivering pages

When you open a page, your device sends its IP address and ordinary request details, such as the address of the page and your browser type, to our server. The server and our hosting provider need these to deliver the page. The site's own code does not write your IP address to its database or its logs. The hosting systems may keep technical logs for a limited time to run and protect the service.

Protecting the site from overload

To limit how many requests one address can make, the server uses your IP address as a key in its working memory. It is never written to a database or a file, and it is dropped soon after you stop making requests.

Suggesting your country

The quiz can suggest your country from your browser's language setting, or from a country hint added by a network provider where one is present. The suggestion is made for that one page view. Nothing is stored and you are not redirected.

The sizing quiz

Your answers stay in the page while you use the quiz. They go to our server to calculate your result, and the server does not store them. A ZIP code or postcode is turned into a place in our list. If you use “use my location”, your coordinates are reduced at once to an area of about 5 km and are never stored or logged. If your appliance list includes a medical device, we use that only to add a safety note to your result. We do not store it, but it is part of your appliance list and so of your share link.

The share link

Your result has its own link, and the link itself contains your answers: the place or area, the US state, your appliance list and your other answers. Anyone who has the link can open the result and see them, so share it with care. We do not store the link. Like any web address, it can appear in your browser history and in technical logs.

Quiz statistics

We count how many times each quiz step is reached, per day, by market and type of system. These are totals only: no IP address, session number, browser details, location or answers.

Clicks to shops

When you click a link to a shop, we add one to a daily counter with the date, the shop, the product and the part of the site the click came from. We do not record your IP address, browser details or the page you came from. The words of a search link are not stored.

If you write to us

We use your email address and your message to reply to you, and keep them as long as we need to deal with your question.

Cookies and storage on your device

Public pages set no cookies and use no local storage or similar technology, so there is no cookie banner. The site uses no analytics tool, no advertising tracker and no scripts from other companies. A login cookie exists only for the site's administrators. A shop you go to from our site may use its own cookies, including to record that you came from us, under its own privacy policy.

Legal bases (UK and EU visitors)

We handle the personal data of visitors from the UK and the EU under the UK GDPR and the GDPR. We calculate your result because you ask for it. We deliver pages, protect the site from overload and reply to messages on the basis of our legitimate interest in running a working, secure site and answering people who write to us.

Who else handles data

• Hostinger provides the server this site runs on, so your request passes through its systems.
• Cloudflare passes traffic between your browser and our server and protects the site from abuse, so your requests, including your IP address, pass through its systems. It may keep its own logs.
• Backblaze stores copies of our database for recovery. The database holds no IP addresses and no quiz answers.
• PVGIS, the European Commission's solar data service, may be asked by our server for the weather of a grid square of about 5 km. The request carries only that square, nothing about you.
• Google: our email is provided by Google (Gmail), so messages you send us pass through its systems.
• Authorities, if the law requires us to give them data.

We do not sell personal data and we do not share it for advertising.

Where data is handled

Our server is in the United States, so your data is processed there. Our providers can operate in other countries, so your data may be handled outside the country you live in.

How long we keep it

• Quiz answers and coordinates: not kept.
• IP addresses in working memory: dropped soon after your last request.
• Technical logs of the hosting systems: for a limited time.
• Messages you send us: as long as we need to deal with your question.
• Daily totals of quiz steps and clicks: kept as statistics. They contain no personal data.

Your rights

Under the UK GDPR and the GDPR you have the right to ask for access to your personal data, to correct or delete it, to restrict its use and to object to our handling of it. You also have the right to complain to the data protection authority of your country. Because we keep so little, in most cases we hold nothing that can be linked to you. We update this page when the way we handle data changes.
